F.A.Q.

Do we put anything in the sand?
No, we only use sand and water to make our sculptures. Although blood, sweat and tears are often added!

Do we use special sand?
Although it is possible to make sculptures from any sort of sand we prefer to use river sand. Unlike beach sand the sea has not eroded the grains therefore they are more angular. This means they stack better and a grater steepness of sculpture can be achieved.

What happens when it rains?
We get wet but unless there is torrential rain for long periods of time the sculpture will remain standing although some crispness may be lost. The wind does more damage by eroding the sculpture grain by grain. For this reason we spray the finished sculpture with wind-screen (a mixture of eco-friendly glue and water).

How long does a sculpture last?
Indoors sculptures can last for years. Outdoors it depends greatly on weather conditions and location but 3 to 5 weeks is normal without any great loss of detail.

Don't you find it sad when you have to tear down a sculpture?
Unfortunately that is the nature of sand sculptures. Over the years we have got used to it, the trick is to always have a camera.
